Miss Diva, thanks a lot for being here with us today at Planet Singer! Your latest single is an excellent release that marks an important chapter in your career, so we are thrilled to know more about your artistic journey. So let’s start from the beginning; how did you discover your passion for music, and what led you to the world of Reggae?
I started singing in my grandmother’s church called O’BrienChurch of God in Montreal, Canada, where I usually led the choir. I had a great love for Reggae because my mother was a manager at a radio station, and she had a program as well. I remember her playing songs from a few reggae artists such as Bob Marley and Marcia Griffiths. During my childhood, I sang at talent shows held in my community in Montreal. I also had a love for r&b, with Mary J Blige and Lauryn Hill being my favorite. During family gatherings, my uncle would play reggae music, and we sing along and dance to Ska. At that point, I knew Reggae was my calling; at the age of 21, I decided to do a demo and recorded my first ep with a recording label called indie roots records. It was a great ep with collabs featuring Macka Diamond etc.
” Number One Girl” is a great song. Can you tell us more about this single?
Number One Girl is my first song coming from my new ep. It’s a song talking about being first in your partner’s life. I think women today need to know the importance of being treated respectfully by men. Meaning we should be the first choice and only choice in a relationship. This song was recorded at Vernon Maytones’ Studio.
The strength of this song is also your outstanding interpretation and artistic vision. Can you tell us where do you find your inspiration?
I wrote this song about a personal experience as well as a friend had a similar situation going on, so I decided to put pen to paper and created the song. I wanted it to be a song that had a great impact for females to bring more attention that we need to be respected.
“Number One Girl” also stands out thanks to the brilliant songwriting and modern production. How important is it for you to collaborate with the right producers and musicians?
To me, it’s very important; I worked with Maytonefor my first ep. He is a legend in the business, and he knows my voice as well as how to bring the best out of my vocal. It was an amazing experience working on Number One Girl, is all I can say.
If you could collaborate with an artist that influenced you and your music, who would you like to share a song with?
I am a big fan of Etana; I love her music, and I think she’s an amazing singer and writer. I would love to do a collaboration with her, especially about women’s empowerment. We live in a world where women are tearing down each other rather than working together.
Are you planning any live gig or live streaming anytime soon?
Yes, I have a live show in Downtown Montreal on August 26 called Live in Concert Miss Diva Number One Girl at Club Balattou. The info will be on my Instagram page @Mtlmissdiva and in the press.
“Number One Girl” will also be supported by a music video set for release this Friday, August 13th. Can you tell us more about it?
My video for Number one Girl has a great concept behind it. The scenes were well put together; it was director Jay from Toronto. We made sure to make the video a little spicy but still focused on how a woman should be treated.
Your music is genuine and authentic. How much of Alicia is in Miss Diva and vice versa?
In a lot of my music, I speak on topics that women go through, including me, daily. Alicia is a sweet person with a great sense of humor, while Miss Diva is what you get at concerts and in person. Since I was a child, I always had a love for fashion, so I always had a touch of that Diva attitude, you can say. I am a strong woman, and I believe to be a Diva is also about loving you no matter the shape or size and always staying true to what you believe in. I would say for sure there is a Diva in Alicia.
What are your plans for the future?
My future plans are to record great music and tour the world. I would love to tour, especially in Africa. I have a band called uprising band, but due to Corona, we had stopped all live shows. Seeing that the music industry has presumed, we are starting to keep live shows again. I enjoy making people happy through my music. I am an artist that uses what I see going on around me in the world as motivation to make music. Today’s world is changing, and I, as an artist, would love to help make it a better place. Visiting Jamaica to do a promo for my new ep is definite. I also have a lipstick line called Diva, and my fall line is coming out in September, as well as my new ep. A few shows on the international level is for sure in the works for moving forward.
Miss Diva, it was such a pleasure having you with us today. We are sure your music will influence many upcoming artists! Is there something you’d like to say to our readers?
